Artist Statement:
There is a time and place for all styles of art, from computers to the human touch.
One fine Christmas morning in 1959, at the age of seven I received a drawing set, and from that point on I mentally knew I was an artist. Even from my kindergarten days jumbo crayons would excite me. My art has always been.
My life pursuit of art has never ended and my art will never end no matter what roller coaster ride comes my way.
Being a realist painter the paintings take long tedious hours, months and years to complete. There are no short cuts for the way I paint. I'm not into the quanity, I strive for the quality of what I do.
I work from my own photographs, with the exception of commission works, then I work with what sources are supplied. Photographs allow me to study the subject over and over. The photos are like road maps for the way I paint.
Its not alway what we see, but what we feel when we see.
Brush strokes are like musical notes or words in a book, misplaced or used incorrectly and the meaning is lost.
Almost ever realistic...

Humor appreciated
"Bruce Burkholder, a Kansas painter, shows his abilities with contemporary realism in "Tropical Dream", a large oil-alkyd painting. While some may oppose its sexual stereotyping-a woman at a beach bends over to spread tanning lotion on a man-the couple seems to be a loving one. Besides, I appreciate the humor inherent in a Kansas artist painting a beach scene."

Great Bend,Kansas -Tribrune:
O'Brien gave the Best of Show award to Bruce Burkholder of Hays, Kansas for his painting in oil/alkyd titled "Illusion and Reality at the DAM." The artist painted his work from a photograph of spectators studying a horizontal nude sculpture as they tour the Denver Art Museum.
O'Brien said she enjoyed looking at the painting because of its photo-realism and its humorous aspects. "Humor is rare in contemporary art and I found this painting arresting for its humor and its overall concept," she said. "The artist has treated the subject seriously technically, but most assuredly there is humor in it. I like the way it was presented."
