Artist Statement:
A variety of subjects, themes and “isms” inspire my paintings. In landscapes, it is the quality of light, the time of day and the mood that intrigues me and makes me want to paint. The excitement and joy of working from the model is getting it down fast, catching the gesture, the attitude, and doing it all in 20 to 30 minutes. I enjoy watching people eating, drinking and having fun, and my figurative paintings can hint at a story, but the larger goal is to find a new or unique view for the viewer. My sketchbook habit and a camera are great tools to help create these works. All the experiences and things I enjoy (food, wine, people, jazz) are grist for paintings: from collages of labels, to views of the golf courses, vineyards, people enjoying themselves, or abstracts of color, texture and emotion. The golf series are the first square format golf images I began in the winter of 2006. I challenged myself to work larger in acrylic on canvas and create movement inside the square. The courses include the Reserve, Forest Hills, the first two courses in Bandon, and the Resort at the Mountain. These are Oregon ...

| Your Personal Biography |
Growing up in the heartland of Peoria, IL in the fifties, he had an idyllic childhood among the flat expanses of corn and the rolling river bottoms. Bruce came of age in the turbulent sixties when ideas about what is art, and what is art for, were being shared with a mass audience. He juggled interest in sports and a track scholarship to college with a love of books and art. Drawing, photography, and playing with clay countered his study of science, anatomy, and physiology during Chiropractic College.
Bruce always loved going to museums of any sort and valued the one in Peoria and the larger Chicago Art Institute, with all the Impressionists. Bruce began his chiropractic career and a family in 1979 and within the year he brought art back into his daily life. Bruce began watercolor painting because it looked simple and glowing on the paper, seemed easier to clean up, and needed less space than clay. Over the past 25 years he has enjoyed reading about art and painting, and had the pleasure of studying with many fine teachers. Bruce believes the most growth he makes comes from time spent putting paint on paper.
All the experiences and things Bruce enjoys (food, wine, people, jazz) are grist for painting; from collages of labels, to views of the golf course or vineyards, or people enjoying themselves. If his enjoyment and pleasure in creating connects with you as a viewer of the work, then he feels that the piece is successful.
Bruce’s work has been accepted in the National Watercolor Society Annual Show and toured the country in their traveling show, and has won awards and been included in other national and regional juried shows like Oregon State University’s Art About Agriculture; the Beaverton Showcase; biannual exhibits of the Watercolor Society of Oregon; and Lake Oswego’s Chronicles Show. His work is in private collections in Australia, Japan, the West Coast, and the Midwest. Bruce’s work is currently shown at the Portland Art Museum Rental Sales Gallery, and Art Etc. in Portland;; and Riversea Gallery in Astoria.
