Artist Statement:
SStatement
Although trained as a sculptor, I have also been exploring aspects of architecture that I feel are critical to the making of sculpture. In addition, I have been investigating the affinities between architectural ornament and relief sculpture. In the last decade, I have completed several collaborative public projects integrating "a system of icons" with an architectural setting. Recently, I have also investigated architectural and iconic sculpture through digital media using 3D Studio Viz and Mechanical Desktop software. The resulting virtual scenes and isolated objects have taken a physical form as prints, videos or rapid prototype sculptures (3D "prints").
Although the digital media I use is simply a means to an end - originally used for public art proposals- the work has taken me into unforeseen directions catalyzed by the lack of public art in NZ. Several years ago, I began visualizing impossible, unlikely, "monuments", installations and wall constructions with sinister overtones. Since the software also accommodates video, I have recently been exploring this digital media as a means for "entering" the virtual environment.
