Painting has been a lifelong dream for me, but before the late 1980's my efforts were sporadic. I had been employed in various fields, mostly on the staffs of politicians and attorneys. I was exposed to the impressionism of a group of artists in New Mexico, and their color and freshness intrigued me. In 1987 I was fortunate to take a workshop with Ray Vinella, one of these painters, in the mountains north of Taos, New Mexico. Vinella and the setting were inspiring.
After that workshop, the more I painted, the more I was consumed with a desire to create beautiful images. Painting every available moment, I read art books constantly and studied paintings in museums and galleries. I continued to study with Vinella, as well as Kevin Macpherson, Don Ward, JoeAnna Arnett, Ron Rencher and Gay Falkenberry.
In 1989 I was encouraged to enter a local juried art festival, and I had what I considered to be enough paintings to do so. It was an inauspicious beginning to a career in art as far as sales go, but the positive comments of the public and encouragement of other artists led me to believe my paintings and my sales would improve. Still working in a law office but cutting my hours to three days a week, I painted more and more, studied more and more, and my painting did improve, although increased sales took a little longer. Then, in 1992 after several successful shows, my husband, Jim, and I decided it was time to devote my energies to painting on a full-time basis. Gallery representation in California, Arizona, Colorado, New Mexico, and Texas was attained, and my dream is coming true.
Painting in a direct manner with vivid colors and bold brushtrokes, the joy for me is in the creation, but the enthusiastic response of viewers validates my efforts. Beauty surrounds us, but we are so busy hurrying and scurrying around, we seldom pay attention to it. In my work I constantly seek to portray the beauty in everyday things--everyday scenes--to encourage viewers to take a moment to appreciate the way the light falls on a garden path or the brilliant colors in a simple vase of fresh-picked flowers. Color excites me, and I love to emphasize it.
In these days following the tragedies in New York City and Washington, D.C., it is my hope that my paintings in some small way will help to erase the terrible images that are burned into our minds. I seek to help viewers concentrate instead on the beauty and harmony God intended for us--to give a message of hope.
