The other night, I had a dream, a most unusual dream. It was more of an allegory than a dream. In this dream I was with my son, at some sort of vacation estate. We were outside, when suddenly a cow appeared. Nothing threatening, just a cow, but curious, like a stray dog. I asked my son not to bother the cow as I know they can kick. Then another cow appeared. Feeling that something odd was going on, I decided to go indoors. But when we got to one of the common rooms, there was a large black bull beginning to take form there. Not an ordinary creature, but somewhat like a large dog-bull creature with many jagged horns shooting out from his massive head—right off the pages of one my drawings. When I turned away in another direction, there was a parade of other surreal creatures emerging from the house, in a floating manner. Very musical. Then a really unexpected thing took place. As the creatures began to exit the building and form a parade, they immediately transformed into people. Barely recognizable people who seemed to have passed through my life, but were not part of it any longer—as if their souls were not fully formed and they were marching off down the hill to some event where they would all gather.
I am not one to lend too much credence to dreams, but I do know that they are stories being told to myself, about myself, showing a hidden message. A secret story.
My work in this show accentuates this idea. It was not intended, it just is. My drawings start with nothing, just a line, no idea. Then the subconscious takes over. The subconscious is the waking dream. It influences my everyday reality. I am the vehicle for its revelation, for an untold story. Something that is both a compilation of my own life experience, resourceful imagination, and both known and hidden feelings. With a veracious intensity, the drawing, if successful, presents a mystery. Even I do not always know the story, but it is there, an unsolved mystery. Something brought forth from the depth of my own human experience.
It has always been this way for me. I have always been fascinated by stories. I have saturated my mind with the tales from all cultures—creation myths, fairy tales, modern mythologies. They have all been poured into me, so that at this stage of my life, I struggle to digest this material—to become a synthesis that integrates energies, from both above and below; both holy and mundane; without fanfare or pretension. This is my human experience.
At the same time, I am obsessed with the craft of drawing. It has been my rebirth as an artist. With this comes responsibility and commitment, as well as struggle to honor the masters who have come before me. In this chaotic civilization we were born into, my struggle is to be a humble servant of my own gift. With that, I have the desire to share it with you. —Bruce Zeines
