Artist Statement:
Patrice Erickson is a realist artist based in Rochester Hills, Michigan. A great admirer of the paintings and techniques of the European Old Masters (15th-18th centuries), Patrice is drawn to working in oils and follows their methods. The technique involves a meticulous underpainting followed by many successive, carefully applied layers of paint known as glazes, which gives the paintings depth and richness of color and luminosity. She also works in sauce on paper to create highly finished, monochromatic drawings.
Her portraiture work came about simply by her fascination for faces. She has always been a keen observer of people and knows that everyone has a story to tell, so getting the exactitude down on canvas is not her only goal. It is the personality and what makes that person unique that gets imbued into the portrait.
Her observational skills extend to nature as well. The most ordinary and commonly overlooked scenery of the outdoors captures her attention and inspires her landscape work. Trees standing in wild fields and rural pastures amongst weeds, wildflowers, and grasses are elements of her subject matter.
