Artist Statement for Craig Newsom

In which the figures proceed with nonchalance or a kind of lackluster determination. A set of events in which figures are victims of a kind of powerlessness. Slaves to a kind of predestination in which they carry out activities which would ordinarily be horrifying but the unseen context is one of drudgery and sameness. Sisyphus comes to mind or characters of myth who are destined to be devoured or ripped apart day after day for eternity. What is that like? What is it like to be trapped in a cycle of horror. How does one deal with an eternity of performing or falling victim to the same tasks over and over. Myth creates figures that exist slightly out of reach and just to the left or right of what we have come to know as reality. Myth points to a realm in which it is possible to suffer endlessly and still maintain a godlike stature.
