Artist Statement:
"Nothing above all, is comparable to the new life that a reflective person experiences when he observes a new country. Though I am still always myself, I believe I have been changed to the very marrow of my bones."

In 1996 I walked down a dirt road between ripening vineyards and silvery olive groves to a stone farm house that would be my home for a week. That walk in Tuscany was a turning point in my life. I had only come to take a workshop with an artist, but left there as a changed human being, my heart cracked open with a new lust for life. Since then I have visited Italy many times to rediscover my Muse.
At times I find great joy in painting actual places I have visited, although I blur the images with the soft edges of memory. I often focus on windows and doorways because they hold metaphorical interest for me.
Over the last several years I have worked on my Black Doorway series which has helped me to explore and express the emotions stirred in me for Italy. From a simple "doorway" in a multicolor ground, the black shape...
