Artist Statement:
Artist Statement for Catherine
Botch

As an artist, I am pulled to
observe and translate,
document, interpret, affect
and effect through my
perception and understanding
of what takes place around me.
Art is like an intriguing
problem or puzzle calling me
to discover and explore, an
adventure to find one of many
possibilities for solution
within my own style. I find,
from one order,I make chaos
while exploring,
experimenting, altering and
manipulating a discovery,
then to rearrange into a new
order, to bring about another
facet, to render another
understanding.

I work in various mediums,
selecting what I predict will
provide the best translation
of what I want to say. I use
whatever works- old or new
materials. I like traditional
for romance in the sense of
storytelling, connections with
the past or "it was better
back when..." - foundation,
institutional - BUT then, new
materials give exploration,
excitement of posibilities,
adventure, or delight from the
unexpected.

The computer for one, I feel,
is a great tool an extention
of what my mind can dream.
Materials made from new
technology are constantly
appearing and providing new
purpose while stretching
boundaries. These new
materials of our time: I
examine their traits,
question ...

Why Did You Become An Artist I did not choose to be an artist- I was wired that way!
It is the way I perceive the world and move trough it. It is a force like that of breathing.
As a small child, I loved the smell of a new box of crayolas and playing with paper: drawing, cutting, folding, making things. When I was 8 and had my tonsils out I sat in bed drawing all day. Drove my parents crazy running out of paper. Then in 5th grade my drawings stood out. I didn't understand I was doing anything different - thought everybody could draw. My teacher told me I had a talent.
As a teenager, I quickly learned my thoughts, approaches and reactions differed from others.

I like traditional for romance, storytelling, connections with the past, foundation, institutional - BUT then, new materials give exploration, excitement of possibilities, adventure, or delight from the unexpected. The computer for one, I feel, is a great tool an extension of what my mind can dream. Materials made from new technology are constantly appearing and providing new purpose while stretching boundaries. These new materials of our time: I examine their traits, question their benefits, test their limits and hopefully employ them to the best of their qualities. The tone and context help determine what I choose or mix. Using both, because I value and respect the past and the things that connect us to them and yet, I get excited by the possibilities of the new- their mystique, the investigation of limits and the quest, the adventure to achieve the solution.

Art is play- the possibilities, the ifs, diverse perceptions!
