Artist Statement for Catherine Botch

Artist Statement for Catherine Botch

As an artist, I am pulled to observe and translate, document, interpret, affect and effect through my perception and understanding of what takes place around me. Art is like an intriguing problem or puzzle calling me to discover and explore, an adventure to find one of many possibilities for solution within my own style. I find, from one order,I make chaos while exploring, experimenting, altering and manipulating a discovery, then to rearrange into a new order, to bring about another facet, to render another understanding.

I work in various mediums, selecting what I predict will provide the best translation of what I want to say. I use whatever works- old or new materials. I like traditional for romance in the sense of storytelling, connections with the past or "it was better back when..." - foundation, institutional - BUT then, new materials give exploration, excitement of posibilities, adventure, or delight from the unexpected.

The computer for one, I feel, is a great tool an extention of what my mind can dream. Materials made from new technology are constantly appearing and providing new purpose while stretching boundaries. These new materials of our time: I examine their traits, question their benefits, test their limits and hopefully employ them to the best of their qualities. The tone and context help determine what I choose or mix. Using both, because I value and respect the past and the things that connect us to them and yet, I get excited by the possibilities of the new- their mystique, the investigation of limits and the quest to achieve the solution.

Art is play- the possibilities, the what ifs, diverse perceptions!
