| Biggest Artistic Inspiration |
Life--A life without art is death. To live is to express. To express is to have lived. Art created from life is sensitive, vivacious, expressive and filled with new life. New life is hope. Hope is a reason to be. Being is living whether here on earth or a future heaven. Art on earth is more tangible, but often touches on the intangible. Art of heaven is enlightenment, yet life. It all works together. The pain we feel, the growth and discoveries from experiences, the loves of our life...they all make us...and without them there is no life and no life is a death. Often a great work of art takes a life of its own--becomes something more than the artist invisioned. The world we know is filled with art and often directed by art. It is my hope that my art is a positive in its reach to others. |

| Why Did You Become An Artist |
I don't think I became an artist. I believe that I always was an artist. My journey, however, has taken many artistic ventures through dance and music...but always turning its way back to the Visual Arts. It is through the Visual Arts that my inner most being is expressed. I feel like a caged tiger when I don't create. Art is a part of my being as necessary as my body, mind and soul. |

Catherine Watson, artist
Biography
The artist, Mary Catherine Watson (Vance), first fell in love with color at two years of age. Catherine, who lived in Upper Peninsula Michigan at the time, played with little paint chips that her mother brought home from a local hardware store. The first word she can remember saying was 'turquoise'. Though born in Little Rock, Arkansas, the experiences of Michigan were her first impressionable memories. She can remember laying in a fishing boat and looking up at the clouds. Then, of course, she wanted to know the names of every type of cloud. As she reached into the water, she traced the shapes of the clouds with her tiny little fingers.
As Catherine grew up, her love or art encompassed visual and performing arts. Catherine soloed as the Enchanted Doll in her first ballet performance at six years of age. She continued ballet and started art lessons in drawing and painting. Catherine won first place for her oil painting, Japanese Woman, at a Brownie Girl Scout Art Exhibition and Juried Competition when she was seven years of age. She won second, third and honorable mention prizes as well. The monetary prizes held no significance in her mind; but, the Miniature Grand Piano was a prize that she has to this day. Catherine continued to perform ballet and art, and started to teach herself to sew and compose music.
At sixteen years of age, Catherine graduated Windsor Forest High School, Savannah, Georgia. Her family moved from her beloved Rose Dhu Island to Metarie, Louisiana. She applied and was accepted as a student at the University of New Orleans. Six months later, her family moved again. After enrolling in Tallahassee Community College, she visited her old ballet teacher. Dance became a living breathing part of her life. Her heart was set on becoming a ballerina even though she had an incredible love of drawing and painting. She danced briefly at the American Ballet Theatre and at the New York City Ballet Theatre. Then tragedy struck. Catherine was truly devastated when her feet could not hold up to the grueling hours of dance. After a serious talk with her podiatrist, Catherine realized she would need to pursue other avenues. It was only natural that she turned to her love of art. For many years, Catherine mourned the loss of ballet through her art. Her art depicted metamorphoses of butterflies into ballerinas and silhouettes of dancers.
After graduating with an Associates degree in Studio Arts from Tallahassee Community College, Tallahassee, Florida, Catherine joined The United States Navy. For the next decade, Catherine enjoyed her Naval Career, traveling part of the world, and, continued as a student at several colleges. She also started a family of her own. She is the happy and devoted mother of Christopher , Michael and Christina Michelle. These emotional experiences helped her continue to create poetry and paintings.
After her honorable discharge from The United States Navy, Catherine moved with her children to Knoxville, Tennessee. By the encouragement of her Godparents, grandparents and parents, Catherine applied and was accepted as a student at The University of Tennessee. The next four years were devoted to children and education. Catherine ran a small before and after day care for children. During the time the children were at school, Catherine attended classes keeping a schedule of 12 to 25 semester hours year round. In May of 1995, Catherine graduated Magna cum Laude with two Bachelor of Arts degrees. In April of 1996, Catherine was selected for and received the Outstanding Graduate Student honor. She graduated with a Master of Science in Curriculum and Instruction in May of 1996.
Catherine's love of art has inspired many a new artist as she has devoted most of her time to teaching children. Catherine has taught in the public school systems of Tennessee, Texas and Maine. The majority of her teaching time has been spent as a middle and high school art teacher. She has also included art in the curriculum as she taught elementary students in a self-contained classroom setting and high school students in a resource room setting. Catherine's philosophy is to model what you teach. Whatever you expect for an outcome, you must model it in order to for others to achieve it.
On June 26, 1999, the artist, Catherine Vance Frey, was married to Mr. Joseph T. Watson, Jr. at Holy Trinity Episcopal Church in Dickinson, Texas. The event was a happy occasion for all whom attended. Catherine, now known as Mary Catherine Watson, happily relocated to the state of Maine with her husband and children and lived in the Belgrade Lakes area for several years. The experience was incredible as they lived along the shores of Long Pond. American Bald Eagles would swoop down and sit along the ice to do their fishing. Red Foxes would trot across the snow leaving a trail of paw prints. The morning sunrise would bring hues of pink and gold glistening across the hills. This was magnificent and awe inspiring.
After several years, Catherine's husband's job brought them to Texas. The next five years were spent developing works of art and teaching professionally as a Lead Art Teacher in Katy ISD. Catherine exhibited and entered a few art contests for Fine Arts and Photography. Since that time, Catherine's husband's job moved them to Alabama and back. Their children have since grown up and are all married. Catherine is enjoying her role as a Grandma and remains devoted to her family, students, friends and nature. She and her husband are extremely happy to be living in Texas where she continues to produce drawings, paintings, sculptures, poems, and, writes fiction.
