October 2005--Best of Show:
Sailing Away recently won "Best of Show" in the juried event: "Deep in the Art of Texas". The juror, Mr. Aaron Parazette, Associate Professor of Art from the University of Houston expressed that he liked the three dimensional aspect of this piece, that the hardware adds a three dimensional interest. The artist was very emotionally invested in this work. He was just very very impressed with the fact that she spent so many hours--especially on all of the hand cut wood; it is all quite intricate.
Sailing Away is a playful work of art in which the artist uses the canvas within the canvas to paint imagery in the style of Leonardo da Vinci. The tall sail boat has multiple pieces of in-laid wood, skillfully cut to create part of the illusion of perspective. The wooden portions of the boat are stained and varnished. The artists skillfully added the illusion of an ocean in its upward movement to give the boat a feeling of movement in an otherwise formal composition. An unsual use of the primary triad color schema adds to the balance and unity of the artwork. The artist and her husband are riding along an otherwise unmanned boat. The portraits of the couple are only realistic within the loving embrace as everything else fades away. The sails are slightly luffing with applied hardware such as sheeting and cleats to add to the dimensional effect. Sailing Away is primarily acrylic, in-laid wood and applied hardware on 30" X 96" Frederick Gallery Wrapped Canvas (constructed of two joined canvases); and, it is one of many of Mary Catherine Watson's works registered with the National Fine Arts Registry. Though the price is "big" as the newscaster from Fox 26 put it, the hours that went into this large scale work were long and arduous (topping 288 hours of work through the Texas hot summer).
