Artist's Statement
October 2004
I believe there is spiritual significance in all honest artistic expression. No matter the medium, in using the universal language of the senses, the goal is to illuminate what is deeply essential. In my work, I strive to explore and express this relationship between the sensory and the spiritual. Certainly, my own spiritual growth has mirrored my growth as an artist. I've found that development of either aspect informs, enlivens, and deepens the other. A nurturing occurs, of self, of others. A expression and a celebration of the feminine spirit.
In creating my work, I become present to the feeling of the moment, inspired by many different things, the weather, the landscape or music, trying to honestly express the spirit of the form or emotion. No thinking, just being present in that moment. The prints evolve over time, as different emotions respond to the many different layers until a sense of completion is obtained, the journey at an end.
I've chosen printmaking as my primary medium because it satisfies my interest in both pure aesthetic inquiry and methodical, formulaic function. Thus, both the creative right brain and analytical left brain are ...
