Artist Statement:
Painting is a unique way of expressing myself, in which I am able to reach the viewer on various levels of perception.
I aim to challenge the viewer to not just look at the piece, but to work with it. By consciously omitting unnecessary elements, and at the same time working out exactly the few details that explain a particular form, I almost force the beholder to step back and piece the components together from a distance.
Only then the parts of the painting begin to make sense. When the complete vision is established in the viewer’s inner eye, then the time has come to take a closer look and explore how a seemingly random brushstroke here and there has helped to create that vision.
In this manner I am able to project my personal philosophy that nothing can be viewed in isolation, but has to be seen in relation to its environment, in other words, “The Bigger Picture”, on a blank canvas.
My paintings are meant to be a piece of décor designed to enrich the environment in which they hang. If the beholder of a piece of my art feels at peace by merely looking at ...

Artist wins prize at Pennsylvania gallery
Arlington Advocate, Thursday, May 27, 2004
Local artist Christian Friedrich Brunner's painting "Vineyards" was chosen Grand Prize Winner in the upcoming exhibition of ImagineStation, LLC, a gallery based in Lehigh Valley, Penn. The show can be seen on the Internet starting June 1.
Brunner moved from his home country Austria to Arlington in 1997 and since has had more than 20 exhibitions of his work in Arlington, Cambridge and Boston, including a gallery on Newbury Street. One of Christian's pieces, "Old Schwamb Mill" can currently be seen at the "Images of Arlington" exhibit at the Arlington Center for the Arts.
He is a member of the Arlington Center for the Arts, the Cambridge Art Association and a signature artist of the Out of the Blue Gallery in Cambridge, where he teaches an art class (Painting with Expression) every Wednesday evening.
The artist has sold more than 50 paintings to local, national (Denver, Chicago etc.) and international (Austria, Germany, France) collectors in the last few years. One of his paintings is on public display in the town hall of his home town of Baden.
He studied art with Alex Huebl, a graduate from the Academy of Visual Arts in Vienna, Austria, and Toni Wichtl and Sigi Krupauer, both graduates from the Academy of Applied Arts in Vienna, Austria.
His passion is Austrian Expressionism (late 19th, early 20th century). This particular movement of Expressionism occurred with Freud's discovery of psychoanalysis, the end of the Austrian-Hungarian Empire and the looming threat of World War I. In this time of change, artists dealt - for the first time in art history - with their angst and with the souls of their subject matters, may that be persons,
still lives or landscapes.
His other zeal is French Impressionism, especially Monet, who he adores for his courageous paintings back then.
The Arlingtonian has a day job as director of Project Connect, a program of Cambridge-based Shelter, Inc., giving homeless, low income and unemployed people access to telecommunication technology such as voice mail, computers and Internet.
The full body of work can be viewed on the Internet at www.christianbrunner.com.
