My work always has been a
personal explorations of human
emotions. I do not paint
portraits of women, I paint
the concept of a woman. Using
the female figure as a
vehicle, I attempt to capture
an emotional moment in time,
for women are the architects
of our civilization.

Varied Voices at Arts on Douglas

By LAURA STEWART
Fine Arts Writer
NEW SMYRNA BEACH -- Like its matter-of-fact title, the new exhibit at Arts on Douglas simply sets out a sampling of works by Florida Artist Group (F.L.A.G.) Area VI.

.......And in the group's showstopper, Cassandra Gordon-Harris's "Beach Petals," the tension between a romantic naturalism and pure abstraction takes the breath away. In the large oil, a dream-like figure occupies the right side of an otherworldly beach scene. Her hair is a blazing red, set dramatically against the orange band of the beach, a narrow blue bar that defines the sea, and the white-hot sky.

She appears to be tossing flower petals on the sand, or perhaps to be caught up in a flurry of petals as if at a beach wedding -- or the memory of one. The sleek stylization of her features transforms her into the concept of a red-headed woman than the portrait of one. The distinction is crucial. Whatever the work's story line, what counts in the artist's superb use of her medium, and the reduction of form to the basics.

The figure in "Beach Petals" seems removed from the world around us, dried and pressed in a psychic album for safekeeping. Gordon-Harris' brushwork is so dense, her oils so opaque and matte that they beg to be touched, stroked, experienced. Formal, terse and exquisitely refined, "Beach Petals" is a stark statement that cuts through the emotions to express itself in purely painterly terms: rich, and powerful.-

'"I selected Cassadnra Gordon-Harris work "Summer Dance" for the Best of Show award not only becasue of the perfection of balance in composition, use of light and color and of course the subject matter; but more importantly there is an overall feeling of softness and an underlying feeling of strong emotion, that is quite powerfull and exciting."'All Childrens Hospital Gala Live Auction Fund Raiser, Vinoy Hotel & Resort, St. Petersburg, FL

Cassadnra Gordon-Harris creates a softness that suggests the Impressionism of Mary Cassatt but instead of the rosy-cheeked children and soft maternal women we expect from Cassatt, Gordon-Harris provides a vision of tall, statuesque females. In her 2004 work "Anticipated Vision". three women with long white backless gowns appear to glide away from the viewer. They are women who carry with them their feeings, complex and unworked out, females who can not fail to intrigue and provoke. The women transport us with them in their journey.
