Artist Statement:
The initial idea for these
paintings began with an
interest in human anatomy.
I pulled graphs and
structures straight from
textbooks and painted them.
For this series, I felt ready
to bring it one step further
by integrating an
academic concept with the
visual anatomy. The idea was
to show the
miracle/monster dichotomy of
medicine by connecting the
anatomy with collaged pictures
of
gears, engines, pistons, and
other assembly line machinery
and textual
references to cloning, in
vitro fertilization, etc.
This line of thinking was
influenced directly by a
contemporary musical piece
entitled "Future Breed
Machine",
whose title and words I find
very provocative (Mesuggah,
2002).
The hot tones of my first
attempts will likely be
carried on into future
endeavors of the same kind
because of the affinity I feel
towards reds and
oranges when dealing with the
realm of the body. My warm
tones help impart life
to skeletal structures, which
stand in for actual figures,
and cause a feeling
of rawness in the figures
which I feel alludes to the
underlying structures.
I prefer a dark, murky
background and sometimes
struggle with a heavy
handedness in this area. I
believe I am historically
influenced in this ...
