Artist Statement:
DOYLE CHAPPELL is a portrait
artist who paints in a
distinctively contemporary
style, creating colorful works
that are the antithesis of
dull, ancestral-type
portraits. From the beginning
of his art studies at the
University of Texas, Chappell
prefered painting people to
other subjects. His sensitive
depictions reflect those
intangible qualities that
motivate and define each
individual. Admirers of
Chappells portraits have
observed that his paintings
seem to reflect a kind of
inner spirit that expresses
much more than the surface
appearance. He finds all ages
to have special beauty.
Although he has created
numerous oil portraits, he
presently works mostly in
acrylic on canvas as that
medium most suites the
spontanious and painterly
brushwork and heavy build up
of layers of colors, on top of
colors. His works are valued
by serious art collectors, and
his portraits are included in
many private collections.
Some of his favorite paintings
are of "just plain folks".
Among the well known subjects
Chappell has painted are Lynda
Johnson Robb, daughter of
President Lyndon Johnson and
wife of Virginia Senator
Charles Robb, with her
children; Senator and Mrs.
Warren Magnuson; and actress
Daryl Hannah.

Exhibitions for Doyle Chappell:

The most important and valued exhibition of Mr. Chappell's paintings is the time honored "unveiling". This is the most productive type of showing for the portrait artist of his work. This gives clients an opportunity to present their paintings as well as the artist, to their friends in a meaningful and very personal way. One of the most impressive formal showings of his work was by special invitation of Mrs. Warren Magnuson, after the completion of her's and Senator Magnusons portraits, and was held in the Blue Room of the United States Capitol. She filled the room with his work and invited her many friends to the Capitol to see his latest works. Chappell later learned from the curator that he was the first portrait artist to have such a show of his paintings in that place. His painting of Lynda Johnson Robb has been seen on television on occasion of their televised open house. Museums such as the Longview Museum and Arts center have exhibited his paintings and used his talents with school children to demonstrate the excitement of being a real painter who can involve people through the dynamic action of his painting process.
