Artist Statement:
A Botanical Watercolorist, I graduated from the University of Illinois, BA, MA in Art Education. I show in galleries across North America. I reflect my prairie roots in my watercolor paintings. I chose teaching as a profession because of my love of school and children. I chose Art as my medium because of a love of the land that I wanted to express and share. Always a romantic about the country, I live in the woods amidst large farms. The prairie, gardening, and architectural restoration have all been important parts of my life and are reflected in my paintings.
The nature of watercolor is perfect for me because it lends itself to spontaneous surfaces and details. Projects that are completely controlled have never interested me. I usually start out with a bit of contour drawing; the shape of a bud or a blossom (whatever has caught my interest in the first place). Then, I make sure the work loosens up by adding water and splashes. Intuitively, I have always used a lot of "empty spaces."
