Artist Statement for Charlotte Gerlach

I enjoy painting wildlife, landscapes and historic landmarks and refer to my style of painting as photo-realistic. I feel that each subject, especially wildlife, should be depicted as it actually is. Painting landscapes gives me a sense of calm and helps me appreciate the God given beauty all around us. I paint historic landmarks, because I love studying about the past and capturing the beauty and character of the old homes and buildings. My medium of choice is oil on canvas, using the glazing technique - building each layer, sometimes up to 6 layers, until I get the dimensional effect I'm after. I want the viewer to feel as though he or she can just walk right into the scene, feel and smell the fresh air, hear the birds chirping, ruffle the animals fur, and go away with a strong sense of love for nature. I also work with Acrylics, Pen & Ink and enjoy creating extremely detailed images on Scratchboard. A professional, self-taught artist, her work has earned numerous awards and has received recognition on an international level for her commissioned work and through her USPS Cancellation Stamps, which are collected world wide. I do consider private and commercial commissions.
