Artist Statement:
Mr. Zhu Chengjun, a native of
China's Jiangsu Province, was
born in 1946. With an
impoverished family
background, he entertained
himself by painting in his
childhood and gained
inspiration from the beautiful
natural scenery of his home
town. At the age of 15, he was
admitted to the Zhenjiang
Chinese Painting Institute and
started his art career ever
since. He took the veteran
painters as his teachers and
copied countless paintings in
the Tang, Song, Yuan, Ming and
Qing dynasties. He also read
many books on art history and
art criticism. All this helped
him lay a solid foundation in
traditional Chinese painting.
He was in the prime of his
life when the "cultural
revolution'' started in 1966.
Zhu's institute was dismissed
in 1970 and he had to labour
in a factory as a pipe fitter.
With a monthly income of 36
yuan, he economized on food
and clothing so that he might
spare some money to buy a
painting brush, ink stick, ink
slab and Xuan paper. Every
time he was on a business
trip, he would observe nature
and sketch what he saw. When
