Artist Statement:
Chevy was born in 1965,
Johannesburg, South Africa.

During the late 1980's Chevy
travelled through Europe to
Israel, and started making and
selling silver jewellery. A
year after his return to South
Africa, in 1990, he ventured
into interior objects. With
copper and brass as raw
materials he designed candle
holders, clocks and mirror
frames. In the 1990's he began
to work with steel, the
greater strength and lower
cost of this material allowed
him to experiment with larger
objects. Later on adding and
experimenting with fibre glass
cloths and resins to disperse
and enhance light reflection.

He has no formal art training.
His influences come from both
those who work around him, as
well as the Art Nouveau,
Industrial and Local Ethnic
movements. He works
innocently, experimenting with
mixed media, and found
objects, often mixing items
and materials together,
forming sculptural functional
furniture, lighting and
interior items.

On the whole Chevy prefers to
use found metal objects,
including industrial and
mechanical scrap. Most of the
copper he uses comes from old
copper geezers which he finds
in local scrap yards, of
industrial Johannesburg.

Chevy's items incorporate a
stock range as well as
exclusive, one-off
commissions. ...
