Artist Statement:
Leon Chew: artist, art
consultant, art educator,
esthetician, scholar of
Chinese and European painting
The first Ph.D. in Fine
Art/Esthetics from Goldsmiths
College awarded by the
University of London, Leon
Chew returned to Singapore in
1997. Besides being an
esthetician-scholar and an
experienced
administrator-educator, he
actively engages as an art
consultant and judge for art
competitions nationally and
internationally. He was
awarded life membership of the
Society of Chinese Artists in
1989. His artworks have been
exhibited in solo shows and
juried art exhibitions, and
collected by both public
organizations and private
bodies in Asia, the Pacific,
Europe and America.
With 'Heart and Hand in
Accord, Travelling Round the
East and the West' as his
motto, he has created
successfully a unique style in
combining calligraphy and
painting. He pursues a state
of 'in between natural
figuration and spiritual
abstraction'. He seeks the Yin
Yang harmony of form and
spirit, past and present, East
and West.
In his painting, thus, he aims
to achieve harmonious
splashings of varied ink and
colors, and a rich mix of
dry-wet,
dispersed-concentrated,
bright-dark and light-heavy
effects, by using the
self-invented technique of
'pigmentizing-and-alumizing'.
