Artist Statement:

I cold sculpt glass using
compressed air and an abrasive
‘carving’ technique. The air
flow and minerals that I use
encourages natural textures to
evolve as I sculpt, emulating
the reductive, erosive effects
of the elements.

I carve glass
into sculptures; furniture,
chandeliers, staircases and
architectural installations.
By etching images onto many
overlapping layers, I create a
kind of bas-relief sculpture
such as the continents of the
world with the overlaying
clouds. Laminating many
layers of glass together with
a crystal clear glue and then
edge lighting the carving with
fiber optics creates unusual,
glowing sculptures.

I feel the natural beauty
of glass sometimes interferes
with its usefulness in
stating an idea or a concept.
In stone sculpting the artist
removes material to reveal
their vision of what lies
inside within. I sculpt glass
with a similar purpose, to
reveal my conception of the
beautiful structures and
textures hidden in nature and
the materials that we interact
with everyday.

I am influenced by the minute
structures in our surroundings
revealed by electron scanning
microsopes and images of the
Earth from space that
satellites record. Bringing
science and art together to
present my impression of the
beauty all around us...
