Commissions for Christine Haehner Murdock:
Most commissions were either house/estate portraits or portraits of people.
Whereas the estate portrait focuses more on what is (or is important to the person, who lives in it), the people portrait can be done in two different ways: The two extreme ends are mind portraits and physical portraits.
The mind portrait can be rather abstract, just interpreting and showing the being, rather then the physical appearance of a person (e.g. Meikenei). The physical portrait focuses on what's in front of you and can be seen with your eyes (eg Hannah & Sandra). In either way, another decision has to be made: Is portrayed what actually is, or an aspect of the person's future. E.g. an aspiring musician might want to show him/herself with attributes that are connected with his success "in spe". There comes into play a metaphysical component of portraits: what you feed your eye (mind) with, influences your future. How a portrait is executed is a matter of discussion between the client and the artist, and depends on the function the portrait is supposed to fulfill.
