Artist Statement for Chris Smith

Christopher Michael Smith was born in London 1969 to an Irish mother and an English father. The artist’s family immigrated to the west of Ireland in 1972 where he grew up. Chris started to show an interest in art as soon as he could hold a brush. Taught informally by his father, who was an art teacher, he acquired a completely reflexive feel for painting through his childhood years.
Influenced by the backdrop of the west of Ireland, his paintings introduced the rugged atmosphere typical of that region. Not only satisfied with exploring the world of art, he demonstrated a deep interest in Science and decided to pursue it in third level education.
Although he receives great enjoyment from painting using an impressionistic style, Chris did not limit himself to these boundaries. Using knowledge of science in his works, he expanded into other forms of expression. He explored his artistic world with modern abstract techniques; some of his works incorporate some optical principles of Physics similar to holography, and some have been based on astronomical phenomena. He regards that art and science are integrated in some way saying as follows:

“Art and Science are not two unrelated disciplines, their core principles are identical. They are both observational and expressive facets of life. I feel that I am fortunate to stand on the intersection.”
