Artist Statement for Cinzia Castellano

It is true that the aim of expressionism is to find visual equivalents for personal, intangible things like experiences, thoughts, feelings and emotions. It is also true that the purpose of abstraction is to get to basics: strip away outward appearance and familiar landmarks, and you are left with the essence of the subject.

I paint not to reproduce a copy of what I see, but to give expression to how I feel about my observations; and because I mainly work on sensual and intellectual questioning and sustained contemplation, the unexpected forms and freedom of abstract art are the most direct way to convey the content of the painting. I am definitely not interested in “illustrating” it. My work is about interpretation rather than representation.

A long time is spent on each picture. I often make changes or even destroy the image, although I always leave visible in the new composition some previous key element of the original.
The idea of changing, partly or complete, the original painting doesn’t worry me because the painting has a life of its own, and my aim is to try to let it come out. That’s also why I want the passage of Time, and the stages through which it has eveolved, to show in my work: different layers are recognisable, and often the initial colours are still visible, over-running the sides of the canvas.

There is a strong link to life experiences and a form of sensuous reverie that builds a bridge between the inside and the outside.

In essence my work is about feeling, for the subject, for the medium, for the colours, and it is those feelings
which I seek to share through my work.
