Artist Statement for Charles Kugler

. . . BUT WHAT DOES IT MEAN?
Eastern philosophy says that life has no meaning, but that we must bring meaning to life. The same can be said of art. If you stand in front of a piece of artwork and ask "what does it mean?", you must look to your own experience. The work either will or won't "resonate" based on that experience. Art is created out of an experience in the hope that it will strike a chord with others. It is why you are free to reject this and any art that you look at. But don't stop looking!
Joseph Campbell's guru, Heinrich Zimmer, said, "The best things cannot be told." That is to say, you can't talk about that which lies beyond the reach of words. Good art is like that. It must be seen through the heart.
I have a degree in fine art with a major in sculpture, from the Milwaukee Institute of Art and Design. I work from my "Riverbend Studio", in rural Wisconsin. I work in all media, particularly welded steel and laminated wood. I love working in the third dimension. Please sign my guestbook. All artists REQUIRE feedback! It might make you bristle, but it is an important part of the process.
