Artist Statement for Carole Lindberg

The oil paintings shown in these pages are unique works created since 1995. Most of the 23 years of my professional fine arts career have been focused in drawing and etching, but I would work from time to time in these hyperrealist paintings, my imagery always evoking psychological dark and dreamlike realms, insinuating another more internal transcendent reality. These are often small format with hand carved wooden frames, and I frequently paint into the frame to obscure boundaries and extend the work practically into three dimensions. The large format pieces are all 68" high with varying widths. They are part of a project which I am still painting, begun soon after 9/11, called "Eden in Exile", referencing the paradigm of the Paradise promised, lost, or mostly unobtainable to us personally and to the majority of humanity. The idea of practicing presence in personal existence, as a protagonist to the Mind as a continually divisive creator of complex situations in which we then become lost and asleep - the result being a growing fear and violence amongst increasingly unenlightened beings. So there is this loose imagery tied into the story of Genesis, an allegorical return to the beginning of the beginning. I work on these paintings daily while living in my own garden of earthly delights, here on the side of a canyon at latitude 0.

I am a U.S. immigrant to Ecuador, where I have lived and maintain my studio since 1978. I spent years in the Oriente jungle, where I developed a large series of drawings and watercolors, again always dreamlike, quite anthropomorphic, rendered into paper printed with a colograph on my printing press (probably the first and only fine art intaglio press to make it to this jungle region). This body of work comprised almost my entire career, and then it stopped as quickly as it begun.

I then began a small but intense phase of graphic experimentation called "Personal to Universal" in which I used solarplate, transfer, drawing, monotype, seriagraph, intaglio to process a part of my personal history which was a lie - and in this process ncovered the lie of living without personal truth, the dominoe affect of invasion when one chooses an authority outside of one's personal being.

This brings us full circle back to the oil painting and "Eden in Exile" phase, which is in full momentum at this time. I offer some images of this series for conversation, and also because it is representative of all my oil painting in general, and of other paintings that are not shown on these pages.
