Artist Statement for Catherine Metcalf

I come from a family of Sculptors and potters but found that painting and drawing was my passion as it was a way of expressing my feeling. Its a compultion and way of life for me and takes all my availbale time and money up.

I studied Fine Art Painting at Kingston-Upon-Thames, London. Whilst in her 2nd Year at University, I won The David Murray Award for Landscape Painting from the Royal Academy of Art. My final year of university was spent with an appointed Royal Academy Tutor and travelling to Derbyshire and Cornwall to do landscape paintings under his direction.

I paint landscapes because I am particularly interested in movement and atmosphere, and inspired by the way light and wind moves through the landscapes affecting the environment and it’s moods. My drawing are in Conté as this best reflects the effects of movement and light I am trying to achieve.

When drawing people and interiors, I like to discover the subjects personality well so that I add my emotions and experiences into my art. I paint with either Oil or Encaustic’s, which take a considerable about of time, several months to complete and are between 4x5 and 4x6ft square in size.
