Artist Statement for Natalia Kempowsky
|
|
|
Human behaviour awakens the curiosity of psychiatrists, sociologists, philosophers and artists amongst other intellectuals. My art practice explores the way the environment affects human behaviour; the way in which the self can be shaped, re-shaped and manipulated according to the environment and situations humans may be faced with.
I started developing this interest by working in the city’s public space. I use materials and concepts that are related to the place itself, such as architectural elements and light specific to each location, in order to disrupt people’s activities and change their approach towards the space. This led to an interest in how human behaviour is conducted by external forces such as the environment we live in. I choose specific locations and study people’s actions in relation to everything that surrounds them. I use different observation methods, such as video, photography and drawing in order to analyze the way people respond to what surrounds them and to determine their experience as a conversation with the place. By this term I mean the interaction between the individual and the location, composed by a multiplicity of variables that include such diverse elements as architectural structures, specific or routine activities, the weather, interpersonal relations, objects, time and certain conventional codes; as well as information that lets me understand social phenomena and patterns in social development. Through these explorations I am able to develop a critical position about the ideas of autonomy and co-dependency.
I do not use the exploration material as artwork. I select the sources that I gather and create a subjective interpretation of my observations. I am not engaged either to one medium for the materialization of my projects. I develop my artwork through sculptural objects, installation, public intervention, drawing and painting which permits me to solidly articulate the main areas of my research: the environment, human action, structure and agency.
PERFIL DE ARTISTA
El comportamiento humano despierta la curiosidad de psiquiatras, sociólogos, filósofos y artistas entre otros intelectuales. Mi práctica artística explora la manera como el entorno afecta el comportamiento humano, la manera como el yo puede configurarse, reformarse y modificarse de acuerdo con el entorno y las situaciones a las que el hombre se puede enfrentar.
Empecé a desarrollar estos intereses a través de un trabajo en el espacio público de la ciudad. Uso materiales y conceptos que se encuentran estrechamente relacionados con el lugar mismo, tales como la luz y las estructuras arquitectónicas propios de cada sitio para luego irrumpir en las actividades cotidianas de la gente y modificar su relación con el espacio. Esto, a su vez, condujo hacia un interés sobre la forma en que el comportamiento humano puede verse conducido por factores externos, tales como el entorno en el que vive. Suelo elegir lugares específicos y estudiar las acciones de las personas en relación con todo lo que allí los rodea. Uso diversos métodos de observación, tales como el video, la fotografía o el dibujo para analizar las respuestas de los individuos a su entorno y definir la experiencia en él como una conversación con el lugar. Con este término me refiero a la interacción entre la persona y el sitio, compuesta por una multiplicidad de variables, que incluyen elementos tan diversos como estructuras arquitectónicas, actividades específicas o cotidianas, el clima, las relaciones interpersonales, objetos, el tiempo y ciertos códigos convencionales, así como información que me permite comprender fenómenos sociales y patrones que determinan el rumbo del desarrollo social. A través de estas exploraciones me es posible desarrollar una posición crítica acerca de las ideas de autonomía y codependencia.
No uso el material de observación como material artístico, sino que selecciono material proveniente del resultado de mi observación y creo, artísticamente, una interpretación subjetiva de mis hallazgos. Tampoco me encuentro comprometida con un único medio para la materialización de mis proyectos. Desarrollo mi obra a través de objetos escultóricos, instalaciones, intervenciones públicas, pintura y dibujo; lo cual me permite articular sólidamente las áreas principales de mi investigación: el entorno, las acciones humanas, la estructura y el agenciamiento.
