Artist Statement for Richard Cranford

One of my theories about art is that a good piece of art tells a story in a tenth of a second.

Another of my theories is that any work of art can be converted into a number of ergs of energy equal to its mass in grams multiplied by the square of the speed of light in centimeters per second. (All right, it's Albert Einstein's theory, but I agree with it.)

I've dabbled in a number of creative disciplines since I was a kid in Amsterdam in the 1530s, including music, writing, flying kites in thunderstorms, poetry, and storytelling. Painting is a more recent obsession, because for many years I operated under the mistaken notion that I had no aptitude for visual art. I think part of the reason for this is the way art is taught in public schools in this country.

But now I paint, and one of the things that's surprised me about painting is that it seems to use the same part of my brain as storytelling. That, and how great Murphy's Oil Soap is for cleaning brushes.

Facio neque permitto ostium infligo tui puga sicut tu licentia.
