CYNTHIA B. CRIER
ARTIST’S STATEMENT
My paintings start with keen observation. The subject of my paintings is drawn from my dual passions, architectural built form and natural settings. My paintings range from scenes of my West Village neighborhood in New York City to landscapes of the Southwest. As a two decade resident of New York City’s West Village, I have been an ardent observer of the inexorable effect of change on these elements. My love for the city’s rich history have led me to create art that seeks to capture and preserve the spirit, color and vitality of life within its matrix.
The world today is over stimulated with visual information. I seek to simplify. Compositional elements in my work are refined down to color and form. Details are intensified by use of saturated color to create a distinctive joyous view of the subject. Drama stems from discovering unique visual perspectives. Mood is expressed by the intensification of shade and shadow.
I desire to draw the viewer into the essence of the scene, and in the process communicate something of our universal experience. As with my architecture, I seek through art to heighten an appreciation of our ...
