Artist Statement for Dana Popescu

Dana Popescu

Born in 1972

Lives and works in Bucharest
Graduated in 1997 of Fine Arts Academy, at painting
Between 1995 – 2004 exhibitions in art’s galleries from Romania and Italy (at Venice).

Reason:
Like life which is captive in the universe who’s great sense can never be known by us totally and so we cannot feel the joy of understanding, so these paintings reveal to us a world of “incomplete image”, of frustration resulting from this absence and from permanently desire for recompose and reconstitute the truth. This artist is interested of sewerage-channel, fields and strings. Underground sewerages of towns symbolize here the option to hide and isolate the dirt, not only residual dirt, but spiritual human dirt. The artist sees the effort to organization, to builded these sewerages which are necessary to civilization like a desire to hide under appearances a dirt which possibly exists anywhere.

Dana Popescu began to represent alive material in it decomposition-- resulting a magma, which is permanently throbbing with eddys to Sewerage. The resulted image is recovered as artistic language from abstract art in which she introduces some ironical elements: axe’s systems, electric lines, stars, and arrows. These mark on the surface of dramatic throbs.

Some paintings represent fields with any vegetal elements, roads and fragments from ribbons, who sometimes carrys sings of artificial joins: light bulbs, colored flags. Some parts are hachured for limiting reality’s unknown zones; some lines suggest transmitted movements like waves. Spectrum’s colors, R.O.Y.G.B.I.V. reveal the God’s relationship he keeped with us, with human world.

In this system the human being is captive. In fact he circulates here all his life, in a network of routes constituted before us, as result of social and individual compulsions created only from his society. But, owing to one “confusion” (probably God itself took part to it), the human being is eliminated like offals into the awful installation for keeping cleanliness. The line of human destiny appears as a waved ribbon, she is fasted somewhere in the future from one single point like a cross.
