Artist Statement for Danielle Sigman

My work involves the creation of ceramic pieces using the pinch pottery technique. I form the clay into an organic shape when I carefully pinch, carve, and smooth it out. The pieces are then fired multiple times. To achieve the right finish, I use multiple firing temperatures and techniques. On some pieces I make the walls as thin as possible to create a beautiful, fragile surface. On other pieces the walls are a little thicker to enable them to handle a rougher firing method such as raku. The spaces I carve out let in light to bring a sense of luminosity to the pieces. My pieces are organic shapes that might suggest coral, flowers or other natural objects but I rely primarily on my own intuition when creating each piece. The movement of light filtering through or reflecting off a piece is very important to me. I believe that when you can see inside or completely through a piece, through a tiny hole or a large carved out shape, it makes it more personal to look at. My pieces are sculptures that resemble functional vessels. I carve a delicate rim on most works to emphasize the surface pattern. The process of shaping the clay by hand without the use of a wheel or other mechanical means is very intimate to me. A part of me is in each piece.
