Is Rococo Pop an Art Movement?
YES!!! Please check out the
latest developments and
contributions here and at
www.myspace.com/rococopop

What is Rococo Pop?

Rococo Pop could be an overly
ornate, fancy style of art
that uses everyday items of
popular culture --- but since
this movement is growning and
expanding we will not define
it at this time.

Who created the concept Rococo
Pop?

Artist DiVa DEE.

How did Rococo Pop begin?

This style of artform began as
paper collages. Using
decorative giftwrap paper as
the canvas; then cutting up
popular magazines, books and
everyday newspapers; then
finally gluing them together
in a very excessively ornate
way.

When did the Rococo Pop Era of
Art begin?

Rococo Pop began in 1995.

Where did the Rococo Pop Era
begin?

In New York City's East
Village; 1995.

Why do you call it Rococo Pop?

This was the description used
for the early pieces I
did...but we will not define
anymore but we will continue
to describe...we will continue
to let Rococo Pop the Artform
develop.

What are some of the elements
used in Rococo Pop?

Good Angels, music notes, song
lyrics/poety, ...

Reviews for Diva Dee:

Rococo Pop: Beyond Surface
By George Nikas

Recently I had the honour to communicate through internet with Miss DiVa Dee, the young Diva who invented Rococo Pop Art culture back in 1995.

As DiVa DEE proudly admits the Rococo Pop phenomenon was definitely hated and poisoned during its first birth years by critical opinions. But, according to my beliefs and my personal efforts to understand the background behind the "new wave", I won't volunteer for any bad criticism. As a person and an artist I have to admit that I dislike many of historic art works which took place in the hole history of art but I must recognise the meaning which transmited each effort to the next generation of art forms and styles.

More important than the market success and the final recognition of Rococo Pop which already takes place, is the exact understanding of the modern procedure of the transmission of "new blood" into high culture. I refer to Dick Hebdige's Subcuture the meaning of style and all the elements from subculture which are finally included and accepted from the new society. Undoubtedly it's quite hard to perceive the every day changes and ironically size doesn't matter.

The idea of blending Rococo and Pop elements into Rococo Pop modern art is experienced into everyday life. As Jonathan Richman used to sing "I'm in love with the old world" it is clearly realized that a lot of the new art work romantically and traditionally escapes into new through high tech techniques. Any visual aesthetics concerning the Rococo and the Pop period can finally found together through digital process, known to many young artists, beyond industrial and mechanical procedures used by Pop artists and far beyond Rococo painting or sculptural unique techniques.

Beyond the surface of Rococo Pop lays a big part of creativity concerning research, talent, fresh ideas and marketing. As the apple of discord Rococo Pop generates fanatic reactions which can be profitable when we realize the unique freedom and fascination given to the Rococo Pop artists during creativity.

I love the spiritual side of Rococo Pop which can be even more prophetic and explode into an art revolution similar to the older and better days of arts and not an experimental tragedy with a boring destination towards the capital of less people as it happens in the fields of modern art or the fashion world. Believe it or not, Rococo Pop, mainly through numerous fashion examples, explains the reasons of its existence and takes place, as a new art form, in our hearts and souls.

Readying the World for Rococo Pop

Trenton Downtowner

I met Miss Diva DEE at the local copy shop, Capitol Copy. We started talking and next thing I knew I was setting up an exhibit for her at Café Olé.

I like that her work is based in affirmations and spirituality. Most artists, including me, show the other side. She’s a breath of fresh air for graphic arts, which can be very unemotional. “Ms. D’s” new clothing line is giving her artwork a life of its own.

LR: What are some of your influences?

Diva DEE: I am influenced by the rococo and pop eras. I enjoy looking at angels from the rococo period in art. It always makes me feel good to be able to see pictures of beautiful angels…the good ones only. Forget the bad ones! Yuck!

Rococo has also been categorized as fanciful, curved asymmetrical forms, elaborate or excessively ornate…in other words, some think it’s gaudy. But I think it’s glamorous and quite beautiful.

In pop art, I am drawn to everyday items and bright vibrant colors. Using what I like in rococo and pop art, I have my own style called “Rococo Pop.”

LR: Where do your themes come from and how do you apply them?

DD: I get my themes from things I am going through—victories and defeats. When you make something or write something down and hang it on the wall and read it everyday to keep yourself going or to make it through a really hard time, it can be quite powerful. Positive suggestion.

LR: What training do you have?

DD: Ha ha—none. I never went to art school. I’m not trying to be some fine artist because I’m not and I really don’t care about all of that. I like doing my own thing my own way. Don’t get me wrong, I have had some excellent teachers come through my life and open my eyes to things I wouldn’t otherwise have seen, and I am grateful for that. I have a great teacher in my life right now—Dean Tantum. He’s teaching me about graphic art, production, software, technique and design. He’s one of the best teachers I’ve ever had. Not to mention, he has me laughing all day!

LR: What are you working on?

DD: Thanks to Debbie Cardarelli (owner of Executive Cuts Professional Hair Salon), I have opened up a chic little boutique called “Rococo Pop” in her front room. There is rococo pop style artwork all over the walls and swank little rhinestone frames covering her glass coffee table as you walk in. I’ve been pressing up (with my very own brand new heat press) some very trendy graphic tees and hot hoodies with Rococo Pop artwork on them. I invite the ladies and gentlemen out there to go get a sassy, new ultrafashionable haircut and acquire some Rococo Pop for your art collection and wardrobe!

Rococo pop will be decorating the millennium with peace and love—and the next stop in the spring is back to New York City!

Diva DEE'S Web site, www.rococopop.com, was still in the formative stages at press time.
