Artist Statement for Stephen Revill

My work is influenced by a lifelong love of medieval history tainted by the romantic codes of chivalry and courtly love. Current influences are the music of Heather Alexander, my new found talent for the bagpipes and a renewed interest in my Scottish heritage. The work explores common items from the medieval and renaissance eras through conventional patterns and techniques of construction while making use of traditional and unexpected nontraditional materials.

This work embodies the patterns and lines of medieval armor combined with influence from my Scottish heritage and the trappings of chivalric honor. The combination of hard lines and fluting contrast to the flowing Celtic knotwork, leather, bone and fabric to create conflict and interest in the work. The familiar images draw on primal memory and inspire thought and reflection in the viewer.

Steve
