Artist Statement for Dave Reiter
Every landscape oil painting that Dave Reiter paints is a reflection on life. According to Dave, “I paint so that the viewer is encouraged to participate in the scene by reflecting on all aspects of life—what it is, what it isn’t, what is should be, plus a host of other thoughts about life.” To achieve this, Dave begins the process way before any paint is mixed or any brush hits the canvas. The process begins with Dave going out in nature with his camera and capturing images that have a strong sense of light and dark tones, composition and anything else that may be of interest in the scene. According to Dave, “If there is an initial idea I see when I take the photo, I will record it. However, my main interest is at this point in the process is to capture the image and the initial feelings of what I want to eventually communicate.” The second step in the process is to go through the photos and select ones that speak about life. Dave is looking for a life principle, application, or theme that will communicate well in the final painting. Dave says, “This is where I do a lot of my own refection.” It is at this point that Dave selects a title for the painting and then begins the actual applying of paint to the canvas. Dave is not so tied to color as he wants the color of the piece to coincide with the message of the painting and the title of the piece. For Dave, the theme drives the color, composition and even the brushstrokes to support a single idea. Dave has chosen to use a simple color palette and applies the paint thinly & in layers. One observation that people will immediately notice when they see a Dave Reiter painting is that Dave leaves the edges of the canvas unpainted, which is unusual for an oil painter. To some this may seem unfinished but to Dave, it is all part of the visual impact and supports the message he is trying to convey. Most of Dave’s paintings have involved water. These include rivers, ponds, streams, oceans, waterfalls, creeks. However, recently, Dave has expanded into cityscapes using his unique style.
