Artist Statement:
I got my first taste of
instrument building at the
Ontario College of Art and
Design in 1984.Later I studied
guitarmaking for two years
with Master builder Michael
Dunn at Douglas College in New
Westminster,BC, graduating in
1990.
I build my acoustic
instruments for using the
acoustically superior Spanish
joint at the neck/body
join.The soundboards are tuned
and this process has proved
effective in producing
consistently well balanced
crisp sounding guitars with
good sustain.
The soundboard woods,I choose
are superior quality,
exhibiting tight vertical
grain. Backs and sides are
chosen for figure and
stability. I like to use
strongly contrasting woods
for the bindings.
I currently favour French
polishing as a finish and have
also finished with tung oil or
lacquer.I consider the French
polish to be superior, both
acoustically and visually. It
is a deep lustrous finish that
allows one to almost see into
the wood.
In my shop, I currently have a
30 string roundback harp, Koa
parlour guitar for sale.In
process, are two more parlour
guitars,and my new Weissonborn
style lap guitar.
