Artist Statement for Daya Bonnie Astor

This summer of 2008, spent in Venice, was focused on babies + puttis. Why are some babies born into healthy surroundings, contentment, joy and nourishment. Why are so many others still born into poverty, disease, and lack of a nourishing environment. Which babies have wings, like puttis? I was interested in the perspective of the baby rather than the mother.
I painted many babies, some in Renaissance inspired pigments, some with golden wings, some in grey voids and some in black and white. There is still no equality and fairness in births.
I also plan to explore the perspective of the mother. I am impacted by years of nursing, and recall especially vivid experiences with self health care in regards to birth and prenatal care in impoverished villages around the world.
