Artist Statement:
Ten years ago, on 24 February 1993, the Toyism art movement was first introduced to the Dutch public.
The foundation of Toyism in 1992 reinstalled regulation into art after individualism had reigned supreme for years.
A manifesto containing some 25 rules underlay this art movement. The past ten years have seen exhibitions in (among other places) Amsterdam, The Hague, Utrecht, Rotterdam, Roermond, Maastricht, Groningen, Dusseldorf and New York, with the one at the World Fine Art Gallery on Broadway, opened by ew York’s city manager Carlos Cuevas, standing out as special.
During the past ten years several works were executed in commission for various institutions, companies and organisations, including Aegon, Delta Lloyd, Rabobank, the cover of the NCRV TV-guide Eastern 1995 edition, a book cover for an art lexicon, and more. Right from the start, newspapers and magazines have published on Toyism, ranging from various stories in the Dagblad van het Noorden, Brabants Dagblad and Haagse Courant to editorials in art magazines and a full-colour page in Trouw newspaper on the occasion of the exhibition in New York.
Originally, three artists instaged Toyism; Dejo, Blaak and Leth.
