Artist Statement for Thomas J. Dembeck
Thomas J. Dembeck recently returned to Alexandria Virgina after living and painting for five years in Seoul, Korea. Before Korea, he lived in Austin, Texas and painted the Texas Hill Country. He was born and raised in Detroit, Michigan. He is retired from the U.S. Army after 28 years of enlisted and commissioned service. He holds a B.S. from Western Michigan University and Master’s Degree from Boston University. He and his wife, Terri, have been married for 25 years. Although limited for time while in the military, he continued to develop his artistic style and on occasion publicly displayed his work. He has won recognition in numerous art shows and competitions. Depicted below are a selection of his Texas Hill Country paintings. He generally paints in watercolor using a pointillist style and then over paints with a unique technique he developed utilizing special water soluble, acrylic-like paints. This method results in an exclusive ‘jewelry’ like work that sparkles and is very sensitive to light. He also works with digital media, collage and mixed media painting. He is involved with many charitable organizations and donates much of his work to needy causes. While in Austin, Tom painted prolifically and was widely displayed and recognized. He also served on the executive board of the Creative Arts Society of Austin. While in Korea he founded SIVAS, the Seoul International Visual Arts Society, an association of International artists in Seoul primarily as a platform for contributing artwork for charity. In 2001 the DL Gallery was established to serve as the headquarters for SIVAS and a meeting place for NGOs and charity organizations. Both SIVAS and the DL Gallery continue to operate today.
