Artist Statement:
Engel of the North
Timeline- 1842 A German industrialist named Engels, ordered his son and heir to visit Manchester in the United Kingdom. The City was home for leading industrial textile companies and Mr Engels owned part of one of them. (Ernem and Engels Limited) . It was in the heart of 'Cottonopolis'(a nickname given to Manchester by a visiting ambassador when he witnessed the huge number of cathedral like Cottonmills concentrated into a small area). Mr Engels son was twenty two years old when he arrived in Manchester. Fresh faced with a head full of fashionable new ideas for a liberal society and a positive way forward for the future of mankind. His father however believed that a touch of good old fashioned business reality would 'straighten' his boy out.
Frederick Engels, walked down the main street in Manchester in the rain. The grey sky was reflected in the tall windows of the gloomy offices as he looked for somewhere to stay. &<8232;At one of the many 'public houses' in the city Frederick stopped to take refreshment.
