| Your Personal Biography |
American artist, Dennis Friel, specializes in capturing the fluid essence of the ocean through his marine life art. As a native to South Florida growing up on the Atlantic, he portrays his inspirations directly to canvas and paper.
Born in Fort Lauderdale, Florida in 1974 and spending most of his childhood on, in or around the water, Dennis has always drawn from his salt-laden experiences.
At the early age of 18 his work was accepted into the Wildfish Collection Gallery in Pompano Beach, Florida where his original paintings hung side-by-side with the likes of such accomplished marine artists as Guy Harvey, Carey Chen and Don Ray, to name a few. It was through this early exposure that groups such as the IGFA, the Broward County Everglades Research Foundation and The Southern Kingfish Association took notice. Dennis would go on to produce works for these and many other organizations including being a featured artist at multiple annual IGFA fundraisers during his young tenure. He would also go on to create numerous murals, and painting commissions to accomplished businesses and world class anglers.
After absorbing his early success, Dennis decided to pursue a higher education as he realized great adventures still lie ahead. He received his formal instruction as an artist while attending the Ringling School of Art and Design and the Art Institute of Fort Lauderdale studying painting, illustration and graphic design, respectively. It was here that his skills became more diverse and he gained an even deeper respect for the environment.
Upon graduating he accepted a design position in the music business creating and developing art for music magazines and CD covers with Sony Music, Universal Records and EMI among the list of clientele. He would soon go on to become Art Director running a team of 18 artists and designers. Dennis worked in this industry for 10 years and credits this time to his growth, expanded vision and overall professionalism as an artist. Some noted accomplishments include creating artwork for such clients as Native Lager, #1 Billboard Blues artist Joe Bonamassa, D-12 & Eminem rap artist Proof, funk-legend George Clinton and being the involved recipient of over 20 NARM (National Association of Recordings Merchandisers) Advertising, Design and Illustration awards. But all-in-all the sea never left him. He remained in Florida. And he never stopped painting what truly inspires him; Music, Art, American Sport and of course, the Ocean.
Back to his roots, Dennis continues painting today, residing in South Florida with his wife and fellow artist, Liz Lima. Whether it's out on the ocean, in the studio painting or raising awareness through conservation, his mission is simple; to represent life's beauty, power and grace through undeniable vision and passion. |
