Artist Statement for Derrick Johnson
I believe an artist should play many important roles within society. Importantly, but not limited to: being a mirror; a sounding board; an idealist; a rebel, an activist and a non-comformist - if need be. I try to address social, political and economic issues in my artwork by focusing on national and international events as they influence and affect our human condition, social conscience/sense of justice and society's fabric in general. Utilizing to varying degrees realism, symbolism, allegory and metaphor in my work. Sometimes, I incorporate pop culture references into my paintings to emphasize a point. Sarcasim, irony and blunt humor can also be present. I have been highly influenced by the work of artists, such as: Francesco Goya, Honore Daumier, Eduaret Manet and Theodore Gericault.
