Artist Statement for Dj Whelan

Through the improvisational ideals of vernacular architecture, I’ve been exploring issues of loss, necessity, social function and creativity as they pertain to homelessness. The small dwellings I construct from bits of earth and recycled materials are inspired by the creative housing solutions of outsiders, squatters and displaced populations, and suggest the random yet deliberate order of assembling one’s home when the means of shelter are left to chance and inspired necessity. While provisional housing addresses basic needs and is utilitarian in form and function, the improvised architecture of the singular dweller is cultivated directly from its environment. It is largely land-based and relies on both natural and salvaged materials. Shelters ultimately accumulate piece by piece in a solo effort for survival and self-expression - man-made objects are married to nature as form and function overlap by default.
