Artist Statement for Dj Whelan

My work deals with issues of home and belonging, a general sense of place and the passing of time. It attempts to illustrate the irony of time’s transience in a fixed setting, this in the context of an enclosed space, an isolated moment inside of metaphoric walls. While the materials are only meant to allude to an actual place, domestic objects and the elements of everyday life are easily recognizable and purposefully assembled. Each piece attempts to render both a grounding in what is familiar, as well as the epiphany of a single moment within this setting – images of a home that may be constructions of an inner haven as well as actual memories.
Assembled pieces are constructed from natural earth and discarded materials found on ritual bouts of travel throughout rural and urban America. Raw or recycled, each ingredient is born from a different place and is often covered with the indelible physical markings of its own history. “Home” then ultimately becomes a three-dimensional collage of many places and many experiences, the materials conveying the importance of the lives, stories and locations to which they originally belonged.
