Artist Statement for David Leaphart

Growing up, my interests were science and math although I felt a pull to the arts. I pursued my technical interests, though, by gaining two college degrees in physics and astronomy! I have worked in the areas of computer networking and scientific research for most of my career.
As I noted, I've always had the interest, fascination, and wonder of art. But the outlet did not occur until my late 40's. I had the opportunity to attend night classes at a local college, and that 'voice within' finally found its way. My science background is that left-brain stuff of the logical, rational, analytical, and objective. My right brain, 'that art voice', wants the intuitive, holistic, and subjective. It's now a pleasure at this stage of life to finally let the right-brain flow…
During my art classes, I experienced all media. But, by far, I fell in love with colored pencil. There are realistic and artistic reasons. One, I don't have a formal studio; an easel in the corner of my sunroom is my studio! Pencil lets me pursue my art without the mess. Second, colored pencil is a wonderful media for creating paintings that can range from impressionistic to super-realistic. Some find its transparency frustrating; I find it wonderful.
