Artist Statement for D. L. Watson

|
For me, painting is a journey, one where I travel deep within myself, allowing me to express emotions both consciously and subconsciously.
I work spontaneously and intuitively, really never knowing where my journey will lead.
I prefer to work on large canvases so that my strokes can be more gestural, making the process physical as well as emotional.
I am experimental in both my technique and subject, but strive to convey a sense of consistency usually done through a process of layering. This process involves many layers of transparent and opaque mediums, adding, scraping, taking away and covering up until the desired effect and emotion is achieved. At the end of this journey, hidden emotions and a part of myself have somehow been exposed.
