| Why Did You Become An Artist |
In my mind I was born an artist and kept in touch with my inner self above everything else. Why I am an artist is a question to the gods or goddesses. sometimes I think it is a blessing and other times it is a curse. That is how it is when given a gift such as being able to touch others in an emotional, intellectual and spiritual way. In a world in which we are born into suffering from the start, it is a test of strength to remain and be true to who you are. Thus welcome to the confusion of planet earth. |

| Your Personal Biography |
I was born in Chicago in January of 1954, my mother Lillian from rural Kentucky and my father Harry an Irish immigrant, who is now deceased.
Since being introduced in high school to the art institute of chicago and the breath taking works of modigiani and van gogh, I had the irresistible urge to paint. After graduating high school in 1972 I would spend Saturday nights with a close friend painting with oils, I have one finished piece still in my possession. I did not attend college, my father wanted my sister and I to get married as a way out of the house. I went to beauty school in 1975 and disliked the work very much, I then got a job at the phone company in 1979, then called Illinois Bell until I had my daughter in 1985.
I was married in 1983 and gave birth to my daughter Kelly and lived in a surburb of chicago for the next 15 years. When my daughter started school I became restless and my urge to paint was still very strong. I began talking about painting to those around me and it became a reality when I bought acrylic paints, canvas and easel in 1992.
Because of my close relationship with my maternal grandmother Ida Gray, I began going thru old photo albums of life filled with poverty in Owensboro, Kentucky where she lived and raised 4 children with a grade school education, she did laundry, ironing and babysat for money. A true survivor and that is what I found so amazing. The photos are emotionally moving in so many ways for me, after 6 months of painting obsessively, I had my living room filled with paintings of family memories from the old photo albums. I joined an art league in 1993 in Wheaton, Illinois as a starting point and entered a painting in a juried show. To my surprise I won a ribbon, a painting of my grandparents from Ireland in their chicago back yard. I began to go to a catholic church (I am by NO means catholic) just to be in touch with my higher spirit to get answers as to where I am going with my painting obsession. I began to get answers slowly in a short amount of time. I brought my work to a critique session at the art league and she was so amazed that she called my work brilliant and gave me avenues in which to pursue such as outdoor shows in chicago. I sold my first painting for $150.00 at 'Art in the Park' in Oak Park, Illinois, it was a milestone that someone would pay me for doing what comes from my soul.
My next show was the Gold Coast Art Fair in downtown Chicago. I sold another to a flight attendant who had connections thru her travels and was introduced to a dealer in Los Angeles. That dealer took me to an international art show in NYC called the 'Outsider Art Fair.' I sold out at $750 a painting, this was now 1994. Most of the work was purchased by a dealer ricco/maresca gallery in soho NY and they gave me my first solo show called 'Painted Memories' in May of 1994, there I sold out at $3600 a painting and had purchasers such as William Louis-Dreyfus who bought 9 pieces and also commissioned me to paint him with his daughters one of which was Julia Louis-Dreyfus.
I was asked by New Yorker magazine to do a self portrait for an article on me in which the writer also commissioned me to paint her mother. The rest snowballed into TV interviews such as Connie Chung Eye to Eye a magazine type news show as well as ny news stations and periodicals such as Harper's, Midwest Today and Chicago Magazine to name a few.
I had my answers and was fulfilled in my goal to reach people and tell a family story thru paintings of which I wrote a summary of each painting as well for the NY solo show.
There is so much more, I have lived in Carbondale for 1 1/2 years and love it here, I love the people and the quiet of living in the country and have a studio in Murphysboro. I teach at John A. Logan and my studio and hope thru my experience to inspire others who have never painted to have the same fulfillment. I hope to create an artist co-op here in which we can paint and have studio space and a gallery in which to support ourselves.
