Artist Statement for David Burke

I live in western New York, am 45 years old and have been drawing, painting and taking photographs for most of my life.
I'm primarily inspired by Nature, and by the way certain organic forms, textures, the play of sunlight and darkness, the change of seasons, the cycles of growth and decay stimulate a sensation of spiritual transcendence within me; of consciously being part
of that eternal flow of energy that is the natural world, and from which all life arises. The beauty and terror and mystery of nature inspires me to create. And the way certain scenes, smells and sounds invoke memories of childhood, when all the world was numinous and filled with wonder.
My artwork is a way to express my perception of that sacred mystery, an attempt to show the interconnectedness of all things, matter, energy, consciousness, life and death.
The basic theme of my art is our unconscious link to the life force of the earth, and how it manifests in human consciousness through our mythologies and religions, our creativity and our dreams.
