Artist Statement for David Tonnesen
David Tonnesen's metal art straddles the lines between fine art and functional necessity. Whether creating a sculptural water feature or residential chandelier, David works directly with the client/owner, architect or designer to achieve the desired design and functional goals. He believes the collaborative process and client input are the catalyst to creative thinking and successful problem solving.
Being a designer/fabricator David has his hands on every aspect of the job, from concept, through fabrication to final installation. By having this level of control, he can let the building process open avenues of discovery leading to a better result. Creating something new and different is a challenge he welcomes. David responds to clients who ask him if he has done a certain type of project before, "I have become an expert at doing things I haven't done before, the uncharted becomes more of an adventure rather than a laborious task. The challenge, the discovery and the client's satisfaction are the ultimate rewards." David’s work includes the 45 foot long landmark wind interactive Cod Fish Sculpture on the Boston Waterfront, several large Menorahs for area Temples as well as custom lighting for over 40 restaurants and dozens of private residences, and large sculpture for clients in Florida, New York, New Hampshire, and Massachusetts.
